Bally

Carl Franz Bally began making shoes in 1851 in Schönenwerd, and industrialized Swiss precision into footwear the way his compatriots did into watches — by 1900 Bally was among the was among the largest shoe companies in the world circa 1900, with its own model villages, museums and a legend growing at altitude: Bally's reindeer-fur boots walked on Everest's summit ridge with the 1953 expedition's high-altitude porters and, most famously, on Tenzing Norgay's feet.

The house matured into Switzerland's oldest luxury brand entire — shoes first, then leather goods and ready-to-wear, the red-and-white Stripe as its quiet flag and the Scribe welted shoe as its benchmark, still bench-made in Switzerland. The B-Chain hardware and curling-B monogram carry the modern accessories.

Ownership has traveled — Regent acquired the house in 2024 after years under JAB — but headquarters, archive and the shoemaking's soul remain Swiss. Bally sells the national virtues in walkable form: durability, discretion, and a century and three-quarters of Alpine self-assurance.
