Bodega Gutiérrez Colosía

Bodega Gutierrez Colosia was founded in 1838 at the mouth of the Guadalete river in El Puerto de Santa Maria, and has belonged to the Gutierrez Colosia family since they acquired the buildings in the 1920s -- making it one of the last sherry houses in the region still under independent family ownership rather than a larger drinks group. Its defining feature is its address: it's the only bodega left standing directly on the Guadalete's bank, a position that shapes the wine as much as the grapes do. The river's humidity, combined with the Poniente and Levante winds that sweep across the nearby salt flats, creates conditions the bodega credits with sustaining the flor -- the layer of yeast that develops over aging fino and gives the wine its characteristic sharp, saline edge. The house ages fino, oloroso, cream and Pedro Ximenez sherries in its riverside cellars, alongside brandies and vinegars made using the same base wines, and pours the range in a tasting room built into the bodega itself. Nearly two centuries after its founding and a hundred years into the Gutierrez Colosia family's stewardship, the bodega markets its own tagline plainly: land, sea and wine in a glass of fino -- a claim tied directly to the one geographic feature no other bodega in the area can match.
