Bombay Perfumery

Bombay Perfumery was founded in 2016 by Manan Gandhi in Mumbai, launched by a family with a much longer background in India's fragrance trade, and built specifically as a niche perfumery pitched at Indian sensibilities rather than an import of Western fragrance conventions. The brand states its intent plainly: to combine an instinctual read on what Indian consumers want with fragrance built to global technical standards, sourcing ingredients from both abroad and at home - vetiver from Haiti, patchouli and nutmeg from Indonesia, cinnamon from Sri Lanka, alongside native Indian materials drawn from Coonoor and Kannauj, two of the country's own perfumery centers. The eau de parfum line leans on Indian place names and references as scent concepts rather than abstractions, with names like Chai Musk, Madurai Talkies, Calicut, Sulawesi and Les Cayes, each composed by international perfumers. A parallel line of soy-wax candles, made with French perfumers, carries its own naming logic - Devdar Spring, Blushing Oud, Ela - extending the same sensibility from skin to home. The company describes itself as "Indian at heart, modern in aesthetic," and that split is the clearest way to read the brand: familiar Indian raw materials and place-based storytelling, delivered through a contemporary, internationally trained nose rather than a traditional attar house's format.
