What Boschendal is known for
Cape Winelands estate near Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, dating to an 1685 land grant to Huguenot settler Jean le Long. Today a working farm with vineyards, the Herbert Baker-designed Cottage 1685, a farm shop and butchery, and three on-site restaurants.
Boschendal was first granted in 1685 by Cape governor Simon van der Stel to Jean le Long, one of around 200 French Huguenot refugees who settled at the Cape. Ownership passed to Abraham de Villiers in 1715, whose family held the farm for 164 years, and the estate's 1812 manor house is a declared National Monument. Boschendal today operates as a working farm, offering accommodation ranging from a Mountain Villa to the Herbert Baker-designed Cottage 1685. Dining is spread across three restaurants, supplemented by a Farm Shop & Butchery selling estate produce.
