Bucket Boys opened in November 2016 at 300 Illawarra Road in Marrickville, in Sydney's Inner West, founded by co-owners Johnathan Hepner and Clint Elvin, with Jay Cook and Ben Miller heading the shop's in-house brewing arm. Hepner holds Cicerone certification, a beer-industry credential comparable to a sommelier qualification, and has been described as the only Cicerone-certified bottle shop owner in Australia. The shop was fitted out with a minimalist, gallery-like design and stocks most of its range as single bottles rather than multiples, aiming for breadth of style over depth of any one brand; wine is limited to one bottle per grape variety or style. A four-tap bar at the front allows tastings and takeaway refills. Stock has grown to roughly 400 beers, including more than 60 sour styles, alongside natural wine, spirits, and a house wine produced with Urban Winery Sydney. Bucket Boys also brews its own beer under its own name. The Marrickville shop was the company's original location before it expanded to a separate bar and a co-op bottle shop inside a pub in neighbouring Petersham.
