What Callipo is known for
Family cannery founded by Giacinto Callipo in 1913 in Pizzo, Calabria — the region's first tuna cannery; named an official supplier to the royal household in 1926 and still processes all its tuna in Calabria, at its Maierato plant.
Callipo traces back to 1913, when Giacinto Callipo opened a cannery in Pizzo, a Calabrian town with a long tradition of tuna fishing and tonnare (traditional tuna traps). It was the first company in Calabria, and among the first in Italy, to can Mediterranean tuna rather than simply salt or sell it fresh. Quality controls set early on earned the firm the License of 'Official Supplier' to the Italian royal household (Real Casa) in 1926, a recognition still cited in the company's own history. More than a century later, Callipo remains one of the few Italian tuna companies to keep every stage of processing — from receiving the catch to canning — inside Italy, now centered at its plant in Maierato, rather than importing pre-processed tuna loins from abroad as much of the industry does. The company is still associated with the Callipo family and remains headquartered in Calabria, marketing its tuna, anchovies and other seafood conserves under the same name it has carried since Giacinto Callipo's founding generation.
