Cecil is one of the core brands of CBR Fashion Group, a German women's fashion company whose foundations trace to 1980, when Detlev Meyer and Friedhelm Behn began building the business that became CBR. Cecil itself launched in 1989 as the group's second major brand, positioned alongside Street One within a company that grew into one of the fastest-expanding women's clothing groups in Europe.

The brand describes its own focus as a 'casual-sporty collection' built around quality, fit, and durability, with attention paid through the production process from material selection to finishing — an everyday-wear proposition rather than directional fashion. Cecil is headquartered in Hannover (CBR's broader operations have also been linked to Lower Saxony more generally), and the label is sold through a network of roughly 366 retail locations in addition to wholesale distribution, putting it among the more widely distributed casualwear brands on Germany's high streets.

CBR Fashion Group has changed ownership over the years, with private equity investors including Cinven and EQT holding stakes at different points, while Cecil has remained one of its two flagship consumer-facing brands throughout.
