Doucal's

What Doucal's is known for

Marche shoemaker founded 1968 by Mario Giannini in Montegranaro, first as 'Ducale', renamed Doucal's in 1973 after his study of the English shoe trade; hand-stitched Italian-leather men's shoes, about 100 steps per pair.

Doucal's began in 1968 as a small shoemaking workshop in Montegranaro, in Italy's Marche region, founded by Mario Giannini under the name 'Ducale.' In 1973 the artisan workshop was reorganized into the Doucal's company, with an Anglicized name inspired by Giannini's time studying the English shoe industry in Northampton. The company still manufactures at its original Montegranaro site, in a district regarded as a center of Italian handcrafted footwear. Each pair is built by hand from Italian-tanned leather through roughly 100 individual production steps, a process that can take up to two months per pair. Giannini's sons, Gianni and Jerry, later joined the business.
