Especias Barranco

Especias Barranco began in 1935, when Pedro Barranco Pérez opened a spice business in Granada under the name Especias Alhambra, selling small paper-wrapped packets of spices around the province. His daughter Josefina Barranco and her husband Remigio Suárez took over in 1951, carrying the trade forward under the family name the shop still uses, and a third generation now runs the business from its home on Calle Puentezuelas.

The shop deals in bulk rather than pre-packaged goods: spices and seasoning blends, natural loose teas and herbal infusions, raw honey sourced from the Granada region, coffee, and dried fruits and nuts, all weighed out to order across the counter or through the online shop. It's a working example of the kind of specialist herbolario-and-spice trade that used to anchor Spanish market streets — the current owners describe the shop's approach as flavor without artifice, prioritizing unadulterated, additive-free product over anything mass-produced.

Ninety years and three generations in, it's as much a neighborhood institution as a retailer, the kind of place where regulars go for a specific blend and leave with a recommendation on top.
