What Flos is known for
Italian lighting manufacturer founded 1962 in Merano by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina, soon joined by designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni; headquarters moved to Brescia in 1962-64, where the Arco floor lamp was created.
Flos was founded in 1962 by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina in Merano, Italy. The Castiglioni brothers, Achille and Pier Giacomo, along with designer Tobia Scarpa, joined shortly afterward. Under Sergio Gandini the company's headquarters moved to Brescia, near Milan, where Flos remains based today. The Castiglionis' Arco floor lamp, designed in 1962 - a long steel arm curving from a Carrara marble base to a chrome shade - became one of the defining pieces of postwar Italian design. Flos is now part of the Flos B&B Italia Group.
