Guantes Luque

The Madrid glove trade at this address goes back to 1886, when a shop and small factory operated at Puerta del Sol under Federico Gely. Juan Antonio Luque later took over the business, moving it first to Calle Espoz y Mina — its current address — and also operating a second location on Calle San Sebastián that closed in the 1950s. The Luque family registered its own glove brand in 1927, the point at which the shop as it exists today, under the Luque name, formally began.

Through the 1930s, gloves worn by contestants in the Miss Spain pageant came from the shop, and it built a reputation for its range of leathers, particularly Swedish and antelope skins, alongside sports gloves and English-cut styles. The business has since passed down through the Luque family to a fourth generation, currently steered by Álvaro Ruiz, without a change of location or name since the 1927 registration.

Guantes Luque has no website and does not sell online — customers are fitted in person at the Calle de Espoz y Mina shop, a continuation of the made-to-measure approach the business has used since Juan Antonio Luque first took it over. Its products have more recently appeared in Spanish television productions, including the series Velvet, and it continues to be used by designers finishing collections that need handmade gloves.
