Ikutoen Pottery Works

Ikutoen is one of the long-established pottery workshops on Naha's Tsuboya Yachimun Street, a district that has been Okinawa's center of pottery production for roughly three centuries. The workshop is currently led by its sixth-generation owner, continuing a family tradition of yachimun ware -- Okinawa's distinctive glazed and unglazed stoneware, traditionally fired in the district's climbing kilns. Ikutoen is particularly associated with a line-carving technique in which a colored glaze or slip coating is applied to a piece and then selectively carved away to reveal the pattern beneath; the studio carves freehand, without a preliminary sketch, a skill practitioners say takes eight to ten years to master. Alongside production for sale, the workshop opens its doors to visitors for hands-on pottery experiences, including shisa (the guardian lion-dog figures ubiquitous in Okinawan architecture), wheel-thrown rokuro work, hand-built tebineri pieces, and egaki glaze-painting sessions, with the shisa experience running 60 to 90 minutes. Finished visitor pieces can be shipped domestically within Okinawa or further afield for an additional fee, allowing participants to take home work they shaped themselves rather than only pieces bought off the shelf.
