Inov-8

Inov-8 was founded in 2003 in the Lake District by Wayne Edy, a Zimbabwe-born footwear specialist who had worked in shoe design and production from early in his career. Edy identified a gap in the UK market: there was little available in the way of dedicated performance footwear for mountain and fell (hill) running, a demanding discipline requiring grip and stability across uneven, often wet terrain.

The brand's first shoe, the Mudroc 290, launched in 2003 and was built specifically for trail and fell running, featuring deep, aggressive rubber studs for traction and a deliberately lightweight construction. The shoe built a following among elite off-road and fell runners, which in turn raised the brand's profile and helped it expand from a niche running shoe into broader hiking and fitness footwear categories.

Inov-8 pushed into international markets over the following years, with sales in the United States accelerating from around 2009 on the strength of its mountain running shoes. The company's growth was recognized in 2014 with a Queen's Award for Enterprise in International Trade, and Inov-8 now sells in more than 60 countries, still tracing its identity back to its Lake District fell-running origins.
