Knize

Knize has tailored in Vienna since 1858 and holds a double distinction: purveyor to the former imperial court, and owner of what may be the most architecturally important small shop in the world — the Graben salon designed by Adolf Loos in 1913, its green marble portal and coolly perfect walnut interior a manifesto of Viennese modernism preserved intact. The house dressed emperors, and Marlene Dietrich famously had her tailoring cut here; Knize Ten, the fragrance created in the 1920s with a bottle design associated with the Loos circle, became one of the first great gentleman's colognes and is still sold at the counter. Bespoke tailoring in the Austrian manner — quieter than the English, more structured than the Italian — continues upstairs. Visit for the Loos rooms even without a commission; leave with Knize Ten, modernism in a bottle.
