La Obra de Arte Soy Yo

La Obra de Arte Soy Yo was created by Colombian artist Paula Sarmiento around an idea stated directly in the brand's name -- 'the work of art is me' -- treating each wearer as a living, singular work of art rather than a passive consumer of fashion. The brand works primarily in denim, reworking the material with references to Colombian craft traditions, most notably through pieces incorporating molas, the reverse-applique textile panels made by women of the Guna people, sourced from artisan communities around Necocli in the Uraba region of Antioquia. That collaboration extended into a capsule project with the Colombian fashion label Americanino, for which Sarmiento was invited as guest designer to create denim pieces built around molas and Uraba artisanal techniques, framed as a way of honoring the country's indigenous craft heritage rather than treating it as decorative surface pattern. The label operates on a by-appointment basis from a gallery-style showroom in El Poblado, Medellin, presenting its pieces in a setting closer to an art exhibition than a conventional retail store, consistent with Sarmiento's own description of the brand as art first and clothing second. Beyond its direct Medellin presence, pieces have also been carried through multi-brand Colombian retailers including Casa Precis and Malva.
