Livraria Buchholz was founded on 22 July 1943 by Karl Buchholz, a German bookseller who fled Nazi Germany after his Berlin business was destroyed in wartime bombing. It opened at number 50 Avenida da Liberdade, where Buchholz introduced innovations to the local trade - stocking foreign books beyond the usual French titles, themed window displays, and art exhibitions - and became a meeting point for cultural and dissident circles. In 1965 the shop relocated to Rua Duque de Palmela 4, where it remains today: a three-floor space combining new releases, records and art shows. It is now owned by publishing group Grupo LeYa.
