What Luke 1977 is known for

Founded in 2001 by Birmingham-born designer Luke Roper, a Central Saint Martins menswear graduate, with lifelong friend Simon Poole, Luke 1977 launched with three T-shirts and still designs its independently owned menswear collections in the West Midlands, its lion logo drawn from the founders' family crests.

Luke 1977 was founded by Luke Roper, who grew up in Walsall Wood in the West Midlands, the son of a dressmaker, and was reportedly making one-off shirts for friends by age 15 before studying menswear design at Central Saint Martins in London. There he developed the plan for the label with lifelong friend Simon Poole; the brand launched in 2001 with an initial run of three T-shirts. The company's lion logo was assembled from the family crests of Roper and his co-founders, Simon and Deborah, giving the brand mark a literal, if informal, heraldic origin rather than a designed-from-scratch symbol. Luke 1977 describes itself as independently owned, with design work based in the West Midlands and a stated identity drawing on what the brand calls the tough character of its native Birmingham. The label has since built out a full menswear range including denim, shirting and outerwear, sold through the brand's own site and stockists such as Tonics and Raw Menswear, alongside wholesale placement through platforms including ASOS.
