M.A.C Cosmetics is a makeup brand founded in Toronto, Canada in 1984 by salon owner Frank Angelo and makeup artist/photographer Frank Toskan. It was originally developed for professional makeup artists before expanding to direct consumer sales, building a following partly through pro-community word of mouth - including a well-documented request from Madonna that led to the long-running 'Russian Red' lipstick shade. By the 1990s the brand had grown to more than a hundred stores worldwide. In 1994 the Estee Lauder Companies acquired a 51% stake, with the founders retaining creative control before Estee Lauder took full ownership; the company has been headquartered in New York City since 1998.
