MeisterSinger was founded in 2001 in Münster, Germany, by Manfred Brassler, a self-taught jeweler who had previously built and sold another watch company, Watch People, in 1999. Rather than compete on complications, Brassler built the new company around a single defining idea: watches with only one hand. The design draws on the history of timekeeping before mechanical watches carried second hands as standard — a shift that only became common in the mid-18th century — evoking sundials and the single-hand clock towers found on medieval buildings such as Westminster Abbey. MeisterSinger's dials are calibrated so the single hour hand can still be read with reasonable precision, encouraging what the brand frames as a more relaxed relationship with time than a conventional multi-hand watch. The company's name references the Meistersinger tradition of medieval German guild poet-composers, and its logo uses a fermata, the musical notation symbol for a sustained pause — a visual echo of the brand's slower approach to timekeeping. MeisterSinger has built its identity almost entirely around this one mechanical premise for more than two decades, manufacturing its watches in Münster.
