What Mercato Mall is known for
Opened in October 2002 on Jumeirah Beach Road, this Al Zarooni Group development was designed by architect Daniele Morelli around an Italian Renaissance theme evoking Florence, Venice and Pisa — the first themed shopping mall built in the UAE, with about 140 stores across 247,000 square feet.
Mercato Mall opened on 28 October 2002 on Jumeirah Beach Road in Dubai, developed by the Al Zarooni Group. Its Italian architect, Daniele Morelli, designed the interior as a walkable Mediterranean town square rather than a conventional retail box, drawing on Renaissance-era references from Florence, Venice and Pisa: cobblestone-style flooring, pastel stucco facades, decorative ceiling murals and arched walkways connect the mall's levels. The name itself is the Italian word for 'market.' It was the first themed shopping mall built in the United Arab Emirates, predating the more elaborate themed malls that followed elsewhere in Dubai. The building covers roughly 247,000 square feet of retail space and houses around 140 stores spanning fashion, beauty, electronics and specialty retail, alongside cafes and entertainment venues. Because the property is a multi-tenant shopping center rather than a single merchant, the individual businesses inside change over time, but the building's Renaissance-themed architecture and layout have remained its defining, unchanged feature since opening.
