Montago Coffee

Downtown (N. Cruse Ave.)

What Montago Coffee is known for

Montago began roasting in August 2019 out of a refurbished '58 Shasta camper before running a mobile cart at Ten Mile Creek Brewery. It now pours espresso and pour-over from a downtown Helena cafe inside the Independent Building.

Montago Coffee's story runs through two mobile phases before it ever had a fixed address. It began roasting in August 2019 out of a refurbished 1958 Shasta camper, serving specialty coffee around the Helena area, then moved into a mobile cart stationed at Ten Mile Creek Brewery -- a way to build a following before committing to a lease.

The company settled into a permanent home at 317 North Cruse Avenue, inside Helena's Independent Building, where it shares space with Mt Ascension Brewery, The Sidecar co-working space and Mosaic Architecture -- a small cluster of local businesses under one roof rather than a standalone cafe on a commercial strip. From that base, Montago serves espresso, pour-over and drip coffee alongside its own baked goods, open seven days a week.

The camper-to-cart-to-cafe arc is unusual enough that Montago leads with it on its own site, treating the 1958 Shasta as the origin point of the business rather than a footnote -- a Helena coffee company that spent its first years mobile before choosing a downtown storefront it now shares with three other local operators.
