Oromo Libreria Editorial started selling online in 2019 before opening a physical space in southern Cali, Colombia on January 3, 2020, launched with support from family and friends rather than outside investment. The name is a deliberate reference: the Oromo people of central Ethiopia are described on the shop's own site as among the first to use coffee beans, with a coffee ritual historically used to reach resolutions in conflicts or trade agreements - a lineage the Cali shop invokes directly in its name rather than as a passing detail. Its original inventory reflected that mixed identity from the start: used books, craft beer, and coffee sourced through what the shop calls diverse social processes, rather than a single supply chain. Four years after opening its doors, Oromo still frames itself less as a conventional cafe or bookstore than as a cultural space, shipping nationally within Colombia and taking all standard payment methods for online orders. The combination - secondhand books, beer, and coffee tied to a specific origin story - sets it apart from Cali's more conventional cafe-bookshop pairings.
