Run by the Yamamoto family, who have dyed kimono in Kyoto for over 50 years, this studio opened its hands-on Dyeing Studio in 1999 — reportedly the only place in Japan letting visitors complete the entire roketsu wax-resist dyeing process.
ROKETSU Dyeing Studio YAMAMOTO grows out of a Kyoto kimono-dyeing business that the Yamamoto family has run for more than fifty years. In 1999 they opened a dedicated Dyeing Studio at their Nishikyogoku workshop, turning a professional textile craft into a visitor experience — reportedly the only place in Japan where guests can walk through the complete roketsu process themselves rather than watching or trying a simplified version.
Roketsu is wax-resist dyeing: a design is roughly sketched onto cotton, then traced in hot wax with a brush, section by section. The cloth goes into an indigo vat, emerging almost black, before a boiling-water bath melts away the wax and reveals the pattern underneath in white against the dyed ground. Visitors choose a textile format — handkerchief, bandana, T-shirt or noren curtain — and dye it themselves under the family's guidance, leaving with a piece that's genuinely their own design rather than a printed souvenir.
The studio has drawn coverage from Japanese newspapers, radio, magazines and television, and visitors from across Japan and abroad, but the operation stays small and hands-on: this is a working family dye house that opened its doors to teaching, not a demonstration built for tour buses.
