Rozsnyai

Rozsnyai was founded in 1980 by Sándor Rozsnyai, who had studied leather chemistry, completing that training in 1970, before earning a degree as a shoe technical engineer from Budapest's Technical College in 1975. The company began by producing fashion footwear, made-to-fit shoes and theatrical costume shoes, and orthopedic footwear later became one of its main product lines, a specialty the company still maintains. In 2002 Rozsnyai launched a separate premium, handmade shoe collection under his own name, combining stylistic references to Italian shoemaking with traditional Hungarian construction techniques, aimed at offering highly customizable, made-to-order footwear at prices below typical luxury handmade-shoe pricing. After years of refining that line, the company opened a dedicated Budapest retail store in 2011, then moved to a larger, more exclusive showroom in 2016 as demand grew. An online shop followed in 2018, expanding the customization options available to customers ordering remotely rather than in person. Rozsnyai is now run as a second-generation family business, continuing under its founder's direction into a category — handmade, hand-sewn dress and casual shoes built with traditional shoemaking technology — that connects Budapest's shoemaking history with a contemporary, made-to-order retail model.
