RVCA was founded in 1999 by Pat 'PM' Tenore together with Hawaiian professional surfer Conan Hayes, launching from Costa Mesa, California. The brand's name and logo reference 'The Balance of Opposites,' expressed visually through interlocking V and A chevrons. Tenore built a roughly 70,000-square-foot Costa Mesa headquarters that also housed the brand's Artist Network Program. By 2009, RVCA reported distribution through about 600 US accounts and 28 countries, before Billabong International acquired the brand in July 2010.
