What Saba is known for

Melbourne label opened by Joe Saba in 1965 as the Joseph Saba Shirt and Sweater Shop on Flinders Lane; the Saba brand launched in 1974. Sold to Daniel and Danielle Besen in 2002, then to the Apparel Group in 2005, which moved headquarters to Sydney.

Joe Saba, an Australian designer of Lebanese descent born in 1940, opened his first shop at 287 Flinders Lane in Melbourne in 1965. He launched a denim label called Staggers in 1969, and in 1974 established the Saba label itself, which expanded to menswear and womenswear and grew to as many as 17 stores. In the 1980s, Saba's stores also sold Japanese avant-garde designers Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto in the Australian market. Joe Saba won the Australian Fashion Menswear Award in 1996. He sold the business to Daniel and Danielle Besen in 2002; the Apparel Group acquired Saba in 2005 and relocated its head office from Melbourne to Sydney shortly after.
