Salsa began as a family denim-laundry facility in Portugal in 1987, formally launching as the Salsa brand in 1994. Its first retail store opened in Portugal in 1998, and the company expanded into Spain during the 1990s, reaching 21 stores by 2002. The brand's identity centers on fit engineering and on its manufacturing heritage: Salsa has produced denim since 1990 and still makes roughly 90% of its jeans domestically in Portugal. Ownership passed fully to Portuguese retail group Sonae in 2020; the company reported 180 million euros in revenue for fiscal year 2024 and now operates in more than 35 countries.
