What SOUS is known for
Madeiran slow-fashion label founded in 2013 by designer Mariana Sousa in Funchal, combining traditional Madeira embroidery, knitting, and crochet with contemporary womenswear; pieces are hand-finished by Sousa's family and local artisans.
SOUS was founded in 2013 by Mariana Sousa, a Madeira-born fashion and textile designer who graduated in fashion and textile design in 2012 and returned home to open her first store in Funchal. The label is built around Madeira's traditional needlework - hand embroidery, knitting, and crochet - reworked into contemporary women's clothing. Production stays close to home: pieces are made by a small circle of women that includes Sousa's mother and grandmother, alongside local artisans, using techniques such as hand embroidery and hand- and machine-knitting on distinctive fabrics like ground flax linen. SOUS sells through its Funchal store and online.
