What Strega Alberti is known for
Herbal liqueur maker founded 1860 in Benevento by Carmine Vincenzo and Giuseppe Alberti; still family-run five generations later, and founder of Italy's Premio Strega literary prize.
Strega Alberti Benevento traces to 1860, when the father-and-son team of Carmine Vincenzo Alberti and Giuseppe Alberti began producing Strega, a saffron-yellow herbal liqueur blended from roughly 70 botanicals including mint and fennel, in Benevento - a city long associated in local legend with witchcraft, which gave the liqueur its name. The company remains under Alberti family ownership, now in its fifth generation. In 1947, Guido Alberti joined writer Maria Bellonci and her husband Goffredo in establishing the Premio Strega, one of Italy's most prominent literary prizes; it continues to be administered by the Maria and Goffredo Bellonci Foundation in partnership with the company. The liqueur is still produced at the company's Benevento facility, which today also houses 'Spazio Strega,' a company museum.
