't Apostelientje

Balstraat runs through the St Anna quarter, on the quiet side of Bruges, and 't Apostelientje trades from it a few doors along from the Kantcentrum, the lace museum and school at number 16. The shop deals in handmade and antique lace only. That distinction carries real weight here: lace is the default Bruges souvenir, dozens of shops sell it, and a substantial share of what they sell is machine-made or imported, a caveat repeated often enough in accounts of the trade to read as the settled local condition rather than a complaint. Stock runs from antique pieces to contemporary work, framed and unframed, across a wide span of prices, and the shop sorts buyers through it. Obscurity here is a matter of a few hundred metres. The Markt and the Burg absorb the day-trip traffic almost entirely; St Anna is a residential pocket, and most visitors who reach it are walking to the lace museum or the Jerusalem Chapel. The shop's trade depends on the people who make that walk on purpose, which is a smaller number than the city's visitor figures suggest.
