Senryuzan works in Hagi-yaki, the pottery tradition that traces back to Korean potters brought to Hagi, Yamaguchi, after the late-16th-century Japanese invasions of Korea, when the Mori clan's lords put them to work making tea-ceremony ware for their own use and as gifts. The style became prized alongside Raku and Karatsu as one of the wares most favored by tea practitioners, in part for its soft, porous clay and translucent glaze, which develops a fine network of crackle over years of use and gradually darkens as tea seeps into it - a slow change collectors call the "seven transformations of Hagi." At its workshop in Hagi City's Koyama-cho district, Senryuzan continues that craft today, throwing formal chawan for tea ceremony alongside vases, sake cups, coffee cups, mugs, and everyday rice bowls and dishes. The studio describes giving each piece individual, careful handling through the shaping and firing process rather than production-line output. Pieces are sold from the shop, open six days a week (closed Sundays and holidays), and through its own online store, which ships larger orders internationally - a practical route to an object whose character, in the Hagi tradition, is meant to keep changing in the buyer's own hands long after it leaves the kiln.
