Aisha Rao

Aisha Rao trained first as a lawyer, earning her degree from the National University of Juridical Sciences before redirecting toward fashion -- studying design at Barcelona's IED and then garment construction specifically at Parsons School of Design in New York. She launched her eponymous label in Hyderabad in 2018, building it around a specific, unusual raw material: fabric waste. Offcuts and remnants are upcycled and reworked into appliqué motifs rather than discarded, then layered with traditional Indian embellishment techniques -- aari and zardozi embroidery, macramé work -- to produce occasion wear that reads as deliberately maximalist rather than restrained, built around bold color and dense surface detail. That combination of sustainability-minded sourcing and traditional Indian handcraft, applied to bridal and festive wear rather than everyday ready-to-wear, has become the label's signature. Every piece is designed and produced in Hyderabad, keeping the supply chain close to the ateliers and embroiderers Rao works with directly. The Mehrauli boutique inside Delhi's Ambawatta One complex -- a courtyard address that has become a hub for independent Indian designers -- is the label's third physical store, extending a brand built initially online into a retail footprint across the country's fashion capitals.
