What Atma Alam Batik Art Village is known for
Atma Alam has produced hand-painted batik since 1987, founded by painter Aza Osman and batik artist Roshadah 'Sada' Yusof in Padang Matsirat, Langkawi. Resident artists still work wax-resist techniques onto canvas paintings, sarongs, and dresses in the village complex the couple built from a single shack.
Atma Alam Batik Art Village was founded in 1987 by Aza Osman, an oil painter who had spent roughly 15 years studying and working in Italy, and his wife Roshadah Yusof, known as Sada, a batik artist and designer. Aza had already run a commercial gallery, Gallery 6, in Kuala Lumpur from 1981 before the couple relocated to Langkawi to establish the village.
The site sits in Padang Matsirat, close to Langkawi International Airport, and is described by regional tourism sources as the island's original batik art village. What began as a single shack grew over subsequent decades into a larger complex housing a gallery, a working batik studio, showrooms, a boutique, and a sunken garden with a water feature.
Resident artists continue to produce both block-printed and exclusively hand-painted batik on-site, working wax-resist techniques onto canvas paintings, dress fabric, and sarongs, which are sold directly through the village's own gallery and boutique rather than through outside retailers.
