Campmor's roots are modest: the company began in 1978 out of a garage in Bogota, New Jersey, selling outdoor and camping equipment by mail order. For its first two decades the business ran mainly as a paper-catalog operation, with a single physical retail store eventually established in Paramus, New Jersey, where the company's warehousing and order-processing have long been based. Campmor moved onto the web relatively early for a catalog retailer, launching its e-commerce site in 1998, well before online shopping became the default channel for outdoor brands. That shift reshaped the business: today the company estimates roughly 75 percent of its revenue comes through its website, with paper catalogs and mail order down to about 5 percent and the physical Paramus store, at 810 Route 17 North, accounting for the remaining 20 percent. The product range has stayed close to its original mail-order catalog concept, camping, climbing and backpacking gear, sleeping bags, tents, and outdoor apparel and footwear, rather than expanding into a broader sporting-goods assortment, keeping Campmor positioned as a specialist rather than a general retailer.
