Chartreuse

Voiron / Isère, France

What Chartreuse is known for

Carthusian monks fixed the recipe for the 130-plant Elixir Végétal in 1737 and introduced the milder Green Chartreuse in 1764; in each generation only two monks know the complete formula. The liqueurs are distilled at the order's own Voiron distillery near Grenoble — open for tours — while the Grande Chartreuse monastery itself remains cloistered.

Best for — Green and Yellow Chartreuse and monastery liqueurs.
