What Chocolataria Equador is known for
A Porto artisan chocolatier known for small-batch bars, bonbons and distinctive packaging.Established 2009.
Chocolataria Equador was founded in 2009 in Porto by Celestino Tedim Fonseca and Teresa Almeida, a husband-and-wife team with backgrounds in the creative industries: Fonseca works as the brand's designer and illustrator, Almeida as its product developer. The pair opened their first boutique in 2010 on Rua de Sá da Bandeira in central Porto, built around what the company calls a 'bean-to-boutique' approach — treating chocolate-making as a continuous process from plantation to counter rather than a purely retail operation, with packaging and in-store display considered part of the same design exercise as the chocolate itself. The house organizes its work around six stated principles — cocoa, chocolate, design, fantasy, love and sustainability — and Fonseca's illustration background shows directly in the brand's visual identity: bars and bonbon boxes carry distinctive graphic packaging rather than conventional confectionery branding. The range runs from single-origin dark chocolate bars to bonbons, truffles, drinking chocolate and cocoa-based products, sold through the Sá da Bandeira boutique and online. The founders describe the enterprise less as a chocolate shop than as a design studio that happens to work in chocolate, a framing borne out by the packaging-forward presentation that distinguishes it from Porto's more traditional confectioners.
