Confeitaria Nacional has operated from the same address on Praça da Figueira since 1829, its neoclassical facade and gilded, mirrored interior little changed since it became official supplier to the Portuguese royal house in 1873. The pastry shop brought the recipe for Bolo Rei to Portugal from France and still guards its version of the Christmas cake as a closely held secret.
