Cortefiel

Madrid

What Cortefiel is known for

Madrid tailoring house turned nationwide chain, founded 1880 as a haberdashery on Calle de Romanones; grew into Spain's heritage menswear/smart-casual retailer, now part of the Tendam group.

Cortefiel began in 1880 as a small merceria (haberdashery) at Calle de Romanones 7 in central Madrid. It remained a single family shop for decades until 1926, when two more Madrid stores opened under a department-style format carrying menswear, womenswear and children's goods. Large-scale textile manufacturing followed in the 1950s and 60s, and the company opened stores in the United States as early as 1968, with broader international expansion from the 1990s onward. By 2015 the group - by then encompassing several fashion chains including Cortefiel, Springfield, Women'secret and Pedro del Hierro - employed roughly 9,000 people across about 1,900 stores in 72 countries; the parent company later rebranded as Tendam.
