What Cow & The Moon is known for
A family-run Enmore gelateria opened in 2010 by John and Wendy Crowl; its Mandorla Affogato flavor won the 2014 Gelato World Tour title in Rimini, Italy, beating entrants from more than twenty countries.
Cow & the Moon opened in Enmore, in Sydney's inner west, in 2010, run as a family business by John and Wendy Crowl together with their son Sam. Within a year of opening the shop won Champion Gelato at the 2011 Royal Easter Show, the start of a run that eventually totaled roughly ten Australian gelato-industry prizes. Its highest-profile result came in 2014, when its Mandorla Affogato flavor — built around almond gelato and espresso — won the Gelato World Tour's world title in Rimini, Italy, after the shop had placed second in the Oceania leg the previous year; the win came against more than twenty other national finalists competing at the tour's Italian final. The Rimini result gave the shop international coverage as an Australian-made gelato beating established Italian producers on their own ground, and it has continued operating from the same Enmore premises since, with a menu built around small-batch, daily-made flavors rather than a large rotating catalogue. It remains a family-operated business rather than part of a chain.
