What Ducati is known for
Motorcycle marque founded in Bologna in 1926 by Antonio Cavalieri Ducati and his three sons as a radio-components maker; built its Borgo Panigale factory in 1935 and entered motorcycles after WWII with the 1946 Cucciolo engine.
Ducati did not start as a motorcycle company. In 1926, Antonio Cavalieri Ducati and his sons Adriano, Marcello and Bruno founded Societa Scientifica Radiobrevetti Ducati in Bologna to manufacture vacuum tubes and other radio components. Success in that business funded a larger factory in the Borgo Panigale district of Bologna, built in 1935. Ducati's move into two wheels came after the war: the 1946 Cucciolo was a small auxiliary engine meant to be clipped onto an ordinary bicycle, and the first motorcycle built entirely at Borgo Panigale, the Ducati 60, followed in 1949. The Borgo Panigale site has remained the company's headquarters and main factory ever since, and now houses the Ducati Museum.
