What Dunham's Sports is known for
Midwest sporting-goods chain tracing to a 1937 bait-and-tackle shop in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan; now headquartered in Troy, Michigan with 260+ stores across 26 states.
Dunham's Sports traces its roots to 1937, when Ron Dunham opened Dunham's Bait & Tackle on Northwestern Highway in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. The original shop built a following through advertisements in Newsweek and appearances on radio fishing programs; it burned down in 1946 and was rebuilt soon after. Robert L. Schmalzried bought the business in 1953 and relocated it to the corner of Northwestern Highway and Orchard Lake Road, steering it toward general sporting goods. By 1991 the chain had grown to 49 stores, headquartered in Waterford Township, Michigan. Today Dunham's Sports is based in Troy, Michigan, and operates more than 260 stores across 26 states.
