Fazıl Bey'in Türk Kahvesi

Fazıl Bey'in Türk Kahvesi traces to 1923, when Fazıl Tuncalı — a civil engineer by training — opened a dry goods shop in Istanbul's historic Kadıköy Bazaar. His sons later converted that shop into a coffee house in his memory, and the business has operated under the Tuncalı family name ever since; the company's registered legal name today, Tuncalı Turistik Rest. İşl. Tic. Ltd., still carries it. The house specialty is Turkish coffee brewed the traditional way, finely ground beans simmered slowly in a cezve, plus mırra, the stronger, unsweetened coffee associated with Turkey's southeast.

Every cup is served with a glass of water and a piece of Turkish delight, the standard ritual accompaniment rather than a house flourish. The beans themselves are arabica, imported from Brazil and roasted and ground on site rather than bought pre-ground. It's a century-old family operation inside one of Kadıköy's oldest commercial districts, selling the same two drinks — Turkish coffee and mırra — it always has, with the shop's own name still tied to the founder who started it as something else entirely.
