What Felix Jud is known for
Independent Hamburg bookshop, antiquarian dealer and art gallery founded in November 1923 by Felix Jud, a Nazi resistance supporter later imprisoned at Neuengamme; still operating in the Neustadt district as one of Hamburg's key literary institutions.
Felix Jud founded his bookshop, originally called the Hamburger Bucherstube, in November 1923 together with business partner Erna Kracht, opening at Colonnaden 104 in Hamburg's Neustadt district. Jud was an outspoken opponent of National Socialism: he supported the White Rose resistance group and was imprisoned in the Neuengamme concentration camp, continuing to sell banned literature to trusted customers during the Nazi era. The shop survived the war, and Jud ran it until his death in 1985. Now formally Felix Jud GmbH & Co. KG, the business continues to operate in Hamburg-Neustadt.
