Flywheel Coffee Roasters

Flywheel Coffee Roasters is family-owned and run out of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood, directly across from Golden Gate Park and next door to Whole Foods. The roastery's story centers on founder Aquiles Guerrero, who -- per the company's own account -- 'was born in a coffee farm in Nicaragua, grew up picking coffee, was a barista by the age of twelve, roaster by eighteen,' before attending Capuchino High School, where he met his wife Marissa. His coffee background runs back further still, to his family's San Francisco shop, Martha and Bros. Coffee, which opened in the late 1980s. That hands-on lineage feeds directly into the current operation: beans are sourced 'direct from the farmer,' and roasting is done small-batch and in-house rather than outsourced. The shop describes its approach as combining 'a lifetime dedication to the craft of coffee with a relentless pursuit of perfection.' Current retail offerings include an 8-cup wood-collar Chemex, a Bodum gooseneck stovetop kettle, a Hario V60, and the house Flyblend espresso, alongside single-origin bags like an Ethiopia Guji Natural. The location itself is a point of neighbourhood color: a coffee shop rooted in a family's four-decade San Francisco coffee history, situated at the edge of one of the city's most-photographed parks.
