Frankie & Jo's was founded by Autumn Martin, previously of the bakery Hot Cakes, and Kari Brunson, previously of juice bar Juicebox, who partnered in late 2015 to open a dairy-free ice cream shop. The first scoop shop opened in November 2016 at 1010 E Union St. in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. The shop's name honors Martin's late grandmothers, Frances and Joanne. Frankie & Jo's built a following for creative, housemade nut- and coconut-based ice cream, and has since expanded to additional Seattle-area locations, Tacoma, and Marin, California.
