Giyanti Coffee Roastery

Giyanti Coffee Roastery opened in Menteng, Central Jakarta in 2012, founded by Hendrik Halianto in a small space that had previously housed a beauty clinic. The name Giyanti nods to Java's own history, and Halianto built the business around personally overseeing every step of the cup in front of him -- dealing directly with coffee farmers, roasting the beans, and brewing the final drink himself rather than delegating to staff. The roastery works Indonesian specialty Arabica sourced single-origin from Bali Kintamani, Papua, and Toraja, roasted on imported Italian equipment that pairs traditional beans with a more contemporary roasting technique. Halianto has described his goal as less about profit than about building a coffee-making culture in Jakarta, offering an intimate counter-service alternative to the city's commercial chains and selling brewing equipment to customers who want to take the process home. The shop has since grown into a full-service Menteng fixture -- open Tuesday through Sunday for dine-in, take-away, and drive-thru, with delivery through Gofood and Grab -- but the founder's hands-on approach to sourcing and roasting remains the throughline from its beauty-clinic-turned-cafe origins to its current operation.
