Green Apple Books

Green Apple Books began in 1967, when 25-year-old Richard Savoy — an Army veteran with a radio-technician job at United Airlines but no bookselling experience — took out a credit union loan and leased a storefront in a pre-1906 building on Clement Street, in San Francisco's Richmond District. He stocked it with used books, comics, and National Geographic back issues, and the shop grew from there: doubling in width over the years, adding a mezzanine and a second floor, and in 1996 acquiring its neighbor of twenty years, Revolver Records, which added new and used music until that annex closed in 2021.

Savoy sold the business gradually starting in 1999 to three longtime employees — Kevin Hunsanger, Kevin Ryan, and Pete Mulvihill — a buyout structured to run over a decade so he could mentor the new owners while spreading the cost of the inventory. Hunsanger sold his shares in 2018; Ryan and Mulvihill still run the store. Despite the vinyl, magazines, and gift items on the shelves, more than 85% of Green Apple's sales are still books.

The original Clement Street shop has since been joined by two sister stores under the same ownership: Books on the Park on 9th Avenue, and Browser Books on Fillmore Street — all three hosting regular author events and school and community fundraisers.
