Gutteridge

Gutteridge was founded in 1878 in Naples by Michael Gutteridge, a Scottish entrepreneur whose first shop, on Piazza Dante, imported cotton and wool textiles sourced partly through his father-in-law, a Yorkshire textile manufacturer. The business soon expanded into a second, larger space inside Palazzo Zevallos di Stigliano on Via Toledo, a building designed by the baroque architect Cosimo Fanzago. What began as a fabric warehouse grew into a multi-brand retailer and, eventually, a mail-order business reaching customers across Europe. The Naples name held its place as a fixture of the city's retail history for more than a century until 1997, when the Capri Group acquired the historic Via Toledo premises and relaunched Gutteridge as a contemporary multi-brand menswear retailer while keeping its Anglo-Neapolitan identity. The brand today trades on that mixed heritage — English textile-trading roots paired with a Neapolitan tailoring sensibility — across its stores and online shop.
