What Hugo is known for

Launched in 1993 as a Hugo Boss sub-brand under creative director Peter Littmann, positioned apart from Boss's tailoring with fashion-forward, unconventional cuts; repositioned toward younger, street-led design under the group's 2021 'Claim 5' strategy.

HUGO was launched in 1993 as a sub-brand of Hugo Boss, introduced alongside another new label, Baldessarini, as the group split its single brand into distinct price points and design identities. Where Boss anchored the group's tailoring and business-formal core, HUGO was built to carry the group's more experimental, fashion-forward output under the creative direction of Peter Littmann, unconventional cuts, brighter colors, and materials that departed from the tailoring codes governing the main line. HUGO's design vocabulary has stayed anchored in that split ever since. In 2021, the group launched a strategy referred to internally as 'Claim 5,' repositioning Boss toward premium and luxury and pushing HUGO further toward younger, street-influenced fashion, alongside a store refresh and heavier digital marketing aimed at that audience. The line was extended again in 2024 with HUGO BLUE, a denim-focused offshoot under the HUGO name. The result is a group structure where HUGO functions as the more youth-oriented, trend-driven counterpart to Boss's tailoring-led main line, rather than a diffusion line in the traditional sense, a distinction the brand has maintained, with adjustments, for three decades.
