What Iggy's Bread of the World is known for
Iggy's Bread of the World was founded in January 1994 by Igor and Ludmilla Ivanovic, who met baking together at Eli's Bread in New York before opening their own bakery. The couple moved operations into a former flour warehouse at 130 Fawcett Street in Cambridge in 1999, where the bakery still bakes and sells bread seven days a week.
Igor and Ludmilla Ivanovic met in 1991 while both working at Eli's Bread in New York City — Igor had come from Belgrade to study business, Ludmilla from Montreal to study acting — and their shared appreciation for good bread grew into a plan to open a bakery of their own.
In 1992, with three of Igor's close friends, the pair opened Pain D'Avignon in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Despite its quick success, Igor and Ludmilla chose to sell their shares and start over on their own terms, opening Iggy's Bread of the World in January 1994. In 1999, the growing bakery moved its headquarters, wholesale operations and baking into a former flour warehouse in Cambridge.
Iggy's now bakes and sells its breads from that Fawcett Street location seven days a week, alongside a café, farmers market stalls and an outpost on Martha's Vineyard, and more recently added a coffee-and-croissants café to its Cambridge operation.
